E-File 1099s directly from QuickBooks

Just like you, I'm getting our W2s and 1099's out as quick as possible. I've noticed that Intuit has made it even easier to file W2s and 1099s. If you have any Intuit payroll service, then Intuit will efile your W2s for free. They are even doing a better job of making W2s available to Turbo Tax. I was working on my own return today and had no trouble downloading my W2 into my Turbo Tax software (last year it never worked for me)

Now Intuit is expanding into 1099 reporting both from within Quickbooks and as part of Turbo Tax business. Intuit will efile 1099s and allow you to print the 1099s on regular paper for $39. Since I only have 1 or 2 to file, I'll just get free copies of 1099 forms from the IRS and just hand-write the 1099 and mail it in. But if you have several 1099s to file, the $39 fee is probably justified.

Intuit is also advertising the use of Turbo Tax to create and file 1099s. I found the online service hard to use and simply abandoned it after trying to get it to work for a while. Maybe it will be easier to use next year and I'll switch to efiling through Turbo Tax.
